A Roman route through the village
The Roman road Stane Street, running between London and Chichester, had to change direction at the spring here, and by around AD 150 Ewell was reputedly the largest village in the county. That older core survives around Church Street today, home to the highest concentration of listed buildings in the village.
The lost palace at Nonsuch
Nonsuch Park, on Ewell's edge, is what remains of the grounds Henry VIII laid out for Nonsuch Palace, a building so elaborate it was eventually pulled down and sold off for its materials rather than maintained. The park that bears its name is now open green space rather than royal parkland.
Bourne Hall's unusual design
Bourne Hall, a distinctive circular building beside a lake in the town, combines a library, a local museum and a community hall under one roof, standing on the site of an older house's gardens.
