The birthplace of motor racing
Brooklands, on the edge of Weybridge, opened in 1907 as the first purpose-built motor-racing circuit in the world, its steeply banked concrete corners still recognisable today. Racing continued there until the outbreak of the Second World War.
From racetrack to aircraft factory
The land inside the Brooklands circuit became one of the country's earliest aerodromes, and by the First World War it had grown into a major centre for aircraft manufacturing, a role that continued into the Second World War.
A private estate built by one developer
St George's Hill, a large private estate on Weybridge's edge, was created by a single builder who bought hundreds of acres of land in the early twentieth century, laying out roads and grand houses that remain some of the area's most sought-after addresses.
